'Fishing and all related activities will not be allowed at Loktak'
Loktakpat, 24 December 2014
All Loktak Lake Area Fishermen’s Union Manipur (ALLAFUM), in public interest for fishers of Loktak would like to inform everyone concerning the recent announcement by Loktak Development Authority (LDA). LDA staffs has been moving around floating villages of Loktak that from 26 December 2014, fishing and all related activities will not be allowed from 8:00-15:30 hours during the day.
No formal notification has been issued in this regard. It is not clear on what ground has the announcement been given. The announcement does not clarify the areas that will be banned from fishing and under what law has the decision been taken?
This move by LDA is a direct threat to the existence of several thousands who are dependent on the lake for their life, besides the fact that it will destroy the very relationships between Loktak, her dwellers, economy (even of Manipur) and culture. ALLAFUM would like to make known that such a move will met with stiff opposition even as it appeal to relevant authorities for their right to live and fish on Loktak.
