Finding garbage dump
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: March 08, 2014 -
In the city, it is easier to locate places for conducting awareness function, seminar or entertainment programmes but when it comes to finding sites for garbage dump; it has become a hectic task.
Undoubtedly, finding a suitable site for dumping garbage is a necessary process when the garbage generated in home or market places becomes too large to be thrown out by conventional pick up.
Leftover household products including food waste, paints, batteries, bottles, etc contain potentially hazardous ingredients or chemicals that requires special care while disposing them of.
Improper disposal of such harmful solid as well as liquid wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health.
With the increase in the population and rising demand for food and other essentials, there has been a steady rise in the amount of waste generated daily by each household.
Most certainly, such waste needs to be ultimately thrown into municipal waste collection centres by area wise municipalities for further disposal into landfills and dumps.
However, either due to resource crunch or inefficient infrastructure, not all of this waste gets collected and transported to the designated dumping sites.
For obvious reasons, people are pointing fingers at Imphal Municipal Council as they are the one entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness and disposal of waste materials generated in the city.
Normally, collection of garbage from households is done by private agency through the channel of IMC.
For this, households are made registered with the agency and pay certain amount of money monthly for the service rendered.
Accordingly, the agency collects the garbage from the registered household twice or thrice a week.
Although this is a welcoming step, there has been a series of complaints from many sections of the society that the agency apparently failing to collect the waste materials in time.
Since the agency roped in for the purpose failed to pick up the garbage on regular basis, accumulated garbage is becoming an emerging problem that the denizens of Imphal have to contain with.
The problem of locating dump site is one of the factors causing hindrances to the sturdy work process of collection and disposal of garbage in Imphal.
But considering the fact the waste products needs to be disposed off against all odds, there should not be any scope for loophole and discrepancy in the process.
However, despite so much talk about ‘zero garbage campaign', with the concerned authority utterly failing to chalk out a long term policy for ensuring safe disposal of garbage, the question of where to dump waste products still haunts mind of the public.
