Fiddler in Manipur
Nagaland Post | Editorial | 4 Nov. 2011 12:10 AM IST
Suspension of the simultaneous road blockades along the national highways 29 (Dimapur-Imphal) and 53 (Jiribam-Imphal) by the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee and the United Naga Council of Manipur(UNC) continues to defy solution despite the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) suspending its agitation.
The UNC had not said it opposed the creation of the Sadar Hills district other than the resentment that Nagas were not consulted nor were their consent obtained before the MoU was signed.
The issue of Sadar Hills has a long and complex history against the backdrop of the politics of major Kuki clans as well as the stand of politically enlightened Nagas. The Sadar Hills issue may have served as a kind of political buffer and barter for the Meitei politicians but in the light of the resentment expressed by the Nagas, it could only widen the schism between Nagas and Meiteis.
