Fault lines run deep
The Telegraph | New Delhi, Jan. 4:
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said today's earthquake occurred as the result of a "strike slip faulting" between India and the Eurasia tectonic plates, an observation which was corroborated by leading scientists from the Northeast. Strike-slip faults are vertical or nearly vertical fractures where the plates move horizontally.
USGS said the India plate is moving north-northeast with respect to Eurasia at a velocity of approximately 48 millimetres every year. It says seismicity in the Himalayas dominantly results from the continental collision of the India and Eurasia plates. The tectonics of Southeast Asia is broadly dominated by the collision of the Indian subcontinent with Eurasia, which causes uplift that produces the highest mountain peaks in the world, including the Himalayas.
The Northeast is situated in seismic zone V, the most earthquake prone zone in the country and keeps experiencing minor tremors.
