Faces Deceptive
Prof Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
Look at the faces
that you come affront on this busy street today!
Is there a shadow of defeat on their faces?
Or is it a shaming face of victory?
Wearing each a visage deceptive
freckles on their faces spreading all over
some with wide, wide chloasma patches
they are bustling grinning, some in brouhaha;
some sulking ever scornful though,
none is there with a clean candid face!
Are these all drunken faces?
Why are they ever scowling and angry
querulous and prone to scuffles?
Are they coming out in this wide street
after drinks four or five at home,
or after having hurried sips too many,
or gulps countless at the hidden corners?
Or are they people who have
swallowed pills psycho-stimulant
and come out in the throng?
Can each and all of them be pill poppers
or sloshed boozers?
No, it cannot be;
but none of the faces is clear and straight!
What stuff might have they slurped
or binged or popped in
or swallowed some lumps of rage upsetting
before they emerge out
with these odd faces deceptive?
Is there no father or guardian or dear ones
to assuage or appease them at home?
What hidden reason could it be
that they are donning with
a shadow of defeat on their faces
or is it a shaming face of victory?
If a real victory
what victory could they have?
