Eyes shining with happiness
K. Radhakumar *
A peasant he is
Born in a corner of a poor country;
A modern, city born boy
Cannot believe his eyes
When he sees such a man
Tilling his land
By a plough pulled by animals.
One needs to accomodate
To another facet of the vast world
He is a lucky peasant
For he has inherited agricultural land
Which measures one-fourth of an acre.
His first grief was
To have a pair of bullocks
For tilling his land
And feeding five hungry mouths.
This he has now
By castrating two young bulls
He has reared from calves.
He lives in misery –
Heavy rain makes him cry
No rain makes him cry.
He also cries
When pests invade his crops.
Life has many pains
But he has no problem with life
And death is not welcome.
Somewhere in a far corner in the country
The peasant outstays his welcome
With blood, sweat and tears.
