Environmental protection

Yet another edition of World Environment Day is here again.
Since 1973, when the first World Environment Day was celebrated to mark the commencement of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment; June 5 is being observed every year as the day to dedicate and raise global awareness on taking positive environmental action to protect nature and the planet Earth we live in and woe our life, existence and much more.
Engaging millions of people and organisations across the globe through various events, World Environment Day is indeed a big celebration which is run run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The event is hosted every year by a different city under a different theme.
This year, the theme for World Environment Day observance will focus on 'Small Islands and Climate Change' with 'Raise Your Voice Not The Sea Level' as the official slogan and Barbados, a small Caribbean island, which is leading the way in solar energy, is hosting the event.
Leaders from around the world would be gathering at the Independence Square in the capital Bridgetown, Barbados, to take part in the celebration and take part in a global conference that will see environmentalists and leaders from governmental, non-governmental organisations, and NGOs chalking out plans for positive environmental action to protect nature and our planet Earth.
Like every year, various Government as well as non-Governmental organisations in Manipur would also be celebrating World Environment Day by organising various functions and activities.
And, in these functions, many people would be delivering endless round of speeches highlighting the need to protect our environment.
Among the various activities planned for celebrating the day, some of the organisations may even involved the school children to come out of their class rooms to plant a tree or two, or participate in awareness rally under the scorching sun.
With this year's theme giving special focus on 'Small Islands and Climate Change', the so-called environmentalists and social activists in Manipur would also made it a point to speaking on the deteriorating condition of Loktak lake and inhabitants on its islands like Thanga and Karang.
Last but not the least; media would be giving wide coverage on the celebration on its next morning edition.
In other words, the celebration of World Environment Day in Manipur this time is going to full of activities just like any other year.
However, talking about the deteriorating environment and the need for action to protect it from further degradation on June 5 every year, only to be forgotten all about it for the rest of the year is not going to help us from saving our fast deteriorating environment.
All we need to do is be aware and strive to make changes in our daily activities that affect our surrounding.
Every day should be celebrated as World Environment Day so that we could see how the saplings we planted last year are growing so far instead of replacing the withered ones with fresh saplings on June 5.
