The Electricity Department is getting lax again
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: April 22 2011 -
SOMETIME AGO the power department was delivered a shock by a PIL, which appealed to the High Court why was safe uninterrupted power supply not given to honest tax payers.
With its make belief world of impregnability shattered, the department vent its fury of having been caught pants down by lashing out at the consumers. In a frenzied move illegal connections and tax defaulters were submitted to shameful exposures and punishment.
When asked about the reasons of their frenetic activity, officials of the Electricity Department claimed that collection of dues taxes and removal of illegal connections would lead to a better supply of power. Has anything which could be construed as a common good resulted from the actions of the Department? One can only yawn and say 'No'.
Power supply still continues to be abysmal. Nothing of significance has developed of late. Sadder still the department has gone off to sleep as usual. They are again cosy in their nest of smug inaction.
One wonders if it is not time to give them another jolt. This time the question should be categorical, what has it informed to the court which asked why it could not give regular power supply to tax paying consumers.
It is a wonder that the department's officials can sleep with an undisturbed conscience. Or is it that these people actually do not have any conscience.
The issue being debated here is one of accountability. And this accountability is not one related to individuals, but one that impinges on the total population. Who is the department thinking of taking for a ride, the judiciary, the populace, or the intelligentsia?
Or all of these?
Do they suffer from king sized ego problems to fiddle with the notion of fooling every one. Surely there is a limit to being fat headed.
So we patiently ask again why is it that you are unable to provide a regular power supply. If you are going to give us new reasons for your inability to provide regular power then we have to ask you why did you go through the slap stick comedy of going hammer and tongs at the customers in the first place.
Please remember many people do not trust you and find your attitude too contrived.
Learn to accept your limitations and answer us a few simple questions. Why can you not provide the people with a regular power supply? Has the drive against tax defaulters and illegal connections done anything to improve the supply of power in the state? Have you taken any positive steps to improve the wretched power supply?
And, don't go away yet. What is your explanation to the fact that Manipur is the only place on earth where power supply is promptly cut off whenever a strong wind blows?
If the phenomenon is related to poor maintenance, pray whatever has happened to your maintenance funds.
And finally, on the power supply front what have you promised to the hill districts, and exactly what have you delivered? We need answers in good time so get cracking.
