From The Sangai Express - February 27 2022
A group of 7th semester Civil Engineering students of Manipur Technical University (MTU) have developed an eco-brick for construction from Laterite soil (Ching leibak), cement, sand and rice husk (wai) .
The new development was a result of a research conducted by Tongram Bidyapati Devi, Banashree Laipubam, Hijam Warjit Singh, Hirachand Nongmaithem under the supervision of Assistant Professor Kosygin Leishangthem, said a statement issued by MTU.
The current clay brick manufacturing is a sector that requires immense firing process at high temperatures and to maintain this temperature a large amount of fuel in the form of wood, coal, biomass etc need to be burnt in the kiln causing serious issues of air pollution, while the newly developed eco-brick being a sun dried brick, is more environment friendly and economical, added the statement.
The team's objective is to come up with a market compatible product with better composition and strength in the near future, added the statement. The team, in the statement, has also appreciated the guidance and knowledge shared by Dr Bhabeswar Tongbram, Vice Chancellor MTU.
