Eco-blockade may fuel ethnic conflict: AHRC
Nagaland Post | Dimapur, Oct 12 (NPN)
Hong Kong based Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has warned that the present economic blockade enforced by Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) and United Naga Council (UNC) has “the potential to develop into an ethnic conflict in Manipur.”
AHRC, in a communiqué Wednesday said the blockade has “chocked the state out of its fragile economic life. The two highways, the jugular veins of the state’s economic life are preferred targets of protesters inside and outside Manipur.”
According to the AHRC, “ordinary commodity prices in Manipur have skyrocketed…to buy fuel, people have to pay several times the actual price. Many hospitals in the state have already stopped undertaking surgeries or even admitting patients due to the lack of medical oxygen.” The press release said that commodities are transported to the state with heavy security due to threats from the protesters.
