Dessicating Diabetes; Escalating Cancer
Jodha Chandra Sanasam *
Day by day
my country-folks, once tough and healthy,
are shrinking desiccated
slow and gradual but sure.
They seem to have consumed
the sweet grains of humanity excessive.
Human relationship, its sweetness, seems
to have entered steady silent
in my countrymen's blood stream
in their arteries, in their veins, in their nerves
all of them to become diabetic.
Cancer, once feared to be destructive
ever set to be moribund
slow and persistent though,
now its strength its dexterity its organs
seem to have grown further escalating.
Solid, strong and formidable
is the look in his bearing
the new cancer surfacing up.
The Maaibas and Maaibees
who proclaimed, ailments they would cure
are grinning cancerous smiles
releasing cancer cells in their breaths,
breathing deep and confident
seem to have become cancer themselves,
sitting decked up handsome in their chariots
their visage glowing
in today's Lai Harouba Deity-out procession;
success written on their faces,
the result of India ink marks
on the fingers of the populace
amidst bullets and gunshots.
Earlier they hollered bursting their throats
or whispered in low tones piercing
in the neighbourhood in the community lanes
hiding in villages amidst thickets of forests
in hamlets on the hills and around the foothills.
Now they seem to have worn out;
followers of cancer have overwhelmed them.
They now yell and holler out,
'Lairem manaaisha!' - 'Hoy! Hoy.'
'Joy! Glory!' - 'Hoy! Hoy!'
'Wealth! Prosperity!' - 'Hoy! Hoy!'
'Sorrow! Hardship' - 'Gone! Routed!'
'Disease! Illness!' - 'Perished! Vanished!'
Cancer is smiling a crushing grin
at the corner of his mouth,
a leader of the masses galore.
Diabetes, dry desiccated, is partaking
in this festival of the village frolic
his smiles and laughters long drawn
his mouth wrinkled at the corners
enjoying the fun and fare of cancer great.
