"Bupen da has left us in the darkness as well as in the middle of the deep sea in this transitory period of culture," lamented eminent theatre personality Ratan Thiyam.
Following a prolonged illness legendary singer, composer and lyricist Bhupen Hazarika whose fame heightened with the mystical blend of Assamese's forceful lyrics and music, passed away at a Mumbai hospital on Saturday. He was 86.
"I have no words to express the sorrow and pangs inflicted us on his demise. I'm shocked at the sad news and my sorrow from the core of my heart," said an emotional Thiyam, who is chairman of the globally acclaimed Imphal-based theatre group, Chorus Repertory Theatre.
He said the current year witnessed loss of cultural icons of the northeast, particularly Assam and Manipur one after another. "After the passing away of noted writer Maharajkumari Binodini Devi, Pandit Khelchandra, Chongtham Manihar, now Bhupen da has left us. This is really sad," said Thiyam, a recipient of John D Rockefeller award.
A former director of National School of Drama, Thiyam has directed more than 50 plays, including the globally acclaimed Uttar-Priyadarshi, Chakravyuha, Hey Nungshibi Prithivi and Chinglon Mapan Tampak Ama (Nine Hills One Valley) among others.
