NEFIS PROTESTS AGAINST THE MANIPUR POLICE COMMANDOS FOR KILLING CHONGKHAM SANJIT IN FAKE ENCOUNTER IN 2009!
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE PROBE AGAINST MANIPUR GOVERNMENT BY AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION!
People from different North-East communities gathered today in huge numbers, at Manipur Bhawan, under the banner of North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) to protest against the fake encounter of Chongkham Sanjit by Manipur Police Commandos (MPC) in 2009. A by-stander Rabina was also killed in this encounter, which took place in a busy market area in Imphal.
It is to be noted that the Police had then alleged that Sanjit had been killed in retaliatory firing. However, recent admission by Head Constable Herojit Singh has revealed that he was told by then Additional SP, Imphal West, Dr Akoijam Jhalajhit, who is now SP of the same district to “finish him off”.
Herojit has admitted that Sanjit was unarmed and had been compliant with the police, when he was detained. This hard fact amply shows the way in which Manipur Police Commandos have been allowed to function by the Manipur Government and have consequently become adept at ‘finishing off’ people in extra-judicial killings and fake encounters.
This is a clear case of state-sponsored fake encounter, denying people their basic right to be tried through a due legal process.

NEFIS also submitted a Memorandum to the Resident Commissioner, Manipur Bhawan demanding an independent inquiry of the case by an International Organization like UNO, since Chief Minister too is implicated in this state-sponsored fake encounter. They demanded that the then Additional SP, Imphal West, Akoijam Jhalajhit , should be immediately suspended and an inquiry should be initiated against him. They also demanded that appropriate compensation should be provided to the victim’s family and the Government should tender an immediate apology not only to the victim’s family, but to the people of Manipur for brutally violating their democratic rights.
NEFIS has pledged to continue its struggle and build a huge movement against the Manipur Government, till such extra-judicial killings and fake encounters stop and the culprits are brought to justice.

Delhi Protests against Manipur Police Commandos on January 28 2016
MEMORANDUM
To,
The Hon’ble Chief Minister,
Government of Manipur.
Through
The Resident Commissioner,
Manipur Bhawan,
Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi.
Sub: Regarding the fake encounter of Chongkham Sanjit by Manipur Police Commandos (MPC) in 2009.
Respected Sir,
It is to be noted that Chungkham Sanjit Meitei, a 27 year old man was brutally killed by Manipur Police Commandos (MPC) in a busy market area in Imphal on July 23, 2009. The Police had then alleged that Sanjit had been killed in retaliatory firing. This hard fact amply shows the way in which Manipur Police Commandos have been allowed to function and have consequently become adept at ‘finishing off’ people in extra-judicial killings and fake encounters. This is a clear case of state-sponsored fake encounter, denying people their basic right to be tried through a due legal process.
We demand following immediate measures from your office:
1. There should be independent inquiry of the case by an International Organization.
2. The then Additional SP, Imphal West, Akoijam Jhalajhit , who is now SP of the same district, should be immediately suspended and an inquiry should be initiated against him.
3. Appropriate compensation should be provided to the victim’s family and the Government should tender an immediate apology not only to the victim’s family, but to the people of Manipur for brutally violating their democratic rights.
If our demands are not met immediately, we will build a huge movement against the Manipur Government which not only brutally violates people’s democratic rights, but protects the police personnel even when their implication in heinous crimes is proved.
