Death
K. Padmakumar *
When I woke up for the first time
In the parental house where I was born
We became acquainted, friend.
You had been consigned to oblivion
the very moment
The unforgettable taste of the elixir of
mother's breast milk
Passed my lips.
On the banks of life and beyond time
I was wedded to the joy of playing
And did not know it was noon already.
How long had I been separated from you -
I had even forgotten your very existence.
Now when the sun of life
Was on his quick sunset tour
I had begun to remember you,
my true friend
And we were all the more intimate since
we had drifted apart.
(Translated from my late father's Shiba by K. Radhakumar)
