"The evil of the world is made possible by nothing but the sanction you give it".
- AYN RAND
The present Manipur society need not be redefined for those who are reading this piece of idea. But I would like to share my points of view, like many others who are tormented everyday with the mention of our homeland.
Many of us have different ideas about the circumstances and situation, and virtually have some solutions in this regard. But none of us dare to touch the situation open-mindedly; all begin within our head and end up there.
Why? Are we going to die like this without securing a stable society, destined not for us, for our future generations?Let me begin with the gravity of the situation.
No one can deny the absence of peace and development in our society. Everything is fragmented in such a way that even we cannot stand together in a single platform to show our solidarity.
The erosion of economy and political life has added strain to the already attenuated social relationships. Mere presence of automobiles and computer does not prove the presence of industrialization and information technology revolution in the state.
Statistical reports have supported the underdevelopment and absence of peace in the state.
In this scenario, everyone is acting like a king in its own virtual kingdom. Corruption has become the norm of the society. Killing is simply justified, not an inevitable punishment.
And don't mention about the nature and character of the teenagers in our society. The foregoing generations have never done enough for us, the future generations are not in a favorable condition and we are living in confusion.
None of our elected representatives and non-elected self-styled representatives has done a remarkable job for the society. Securities, in terms of food, health, water, electricity, housing and life are the essential ingredients of modern democracy.
We never fight for these issues. Our dignity will not be degraded if we concentrate on these core issues rather than petty power politics among ourselves in the name our motherland. Multiple governments create multiple problems instead of bringing peace and prosperity.
If we have to live in the 21st century then we have to sort out these entire problems. History has proved that the mass always is the loser in such petty power politics. Our motherland has never experienced a better civilization at par with other society since 2000 years.
Take the case of Armed Forces Special Power Act, 1958 (AFSPA), everyone has the sentiment that it should be revoked, but it is still there inspite of the various incongruent protests and heartening fasting by Sharmila.
Democracy is used to form on the basis of public opinion. In this information technology era, merely forming public opinion is not enough for making our voice to hear by the concerned authority.
Prior to this era, public opinion played a pivotal role in redressing public grievances. This is because public opinion and public force were embedded together.
Technology has detached the public force from the public opinion and it has failed to make an impact on the concerned authority. People are still relying on the traditional methods of public opinion, which is no longer as it used to be.
This is the mistake we are doing with AFSPA and specially Sharmila. The sentiments of the public fail to turn into public force, and end when it is only at the level of opinion.
The concerned authority is wise enough to know what kind of public opinion should be considered and neglected. In the Jessica Lal murder case, it was the public opinion combined with the public forces that compel the judiciary to redress the public demand for justice.
Make the sentiments and opinions turn into a large force, a societal one, and then the grievances will be heard by the concerned authority. This law is applicable to all problems. Even Mahatma Gandhi also propounded the role of public opinion combined with public force in the form of non violence movement.
But, is there any Manipuri who can dedicate, without any politics and related organizations, for the cause of the people? People have seen various self styled leaders of persons and organizations, who have betrayed people by earning money, assets etc., that people have no longer trust in any such persons and organizations.
People's suspicion is justified because none of them were sincere. You can find many of such betrayers in every locality. Many of them have remained powerful without any shame and even threatened their neighbors with dire consequences for petty matters.
The defunct state machinery needs not be mentioned again. AFSPA no longer remain a favorite of the public interest. Instead of redressing, it has aggravated the societal grievances.
Leave aside other problems, so far, not even a single elected representative voiced against AFSPA to the concerned authority. They are not going to be jailed if they voiced for the people, along with the people. It is their self interest that restrained them to come out openly with the public.
They can be a good leader and history maker even if they slightly come out from their self centered area. Democracy becomes a compulsion for us to choose a timid and corrupted person among us as our representatives.
A good leader can channelise the sentiments of the public for societal inertest. How long we are going to cheat ourselves? If we are satisfied with our condition or think to remain on the safe-side then let it be.
In this critical juncture of our society, this very space can make a mark by organizing a voice of the people and for the people, at least by writing more on the present problems and suffering of ourselves.
In this chaos, I dare to dream a better Manipur society free of violence and underdevelopment.
