About Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University)
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Amrita University) was started by the world-renowned humanitarian
leader, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Amma. As Chancellor of the University, Amma continues to
guide the university's mission and growth. With headquarters at Coimbatore and campuses at Amritapuri,
Kochi, Bengaluru and Mysore, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has emerged as one of the fastest growing
institutions of higher learning in India. Based on evaluation of all campuses and programs by a peer
review committee, the university has been accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC) with an ‘A’ grade.
Amrita has also been ranked in the ivy league of Indian universities along with Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai etc. in the recent review of Deemed
Universities constituted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of the Government of
India. Amrita is ranked Category 1 in this review, popularly known as the Tandon Committee Report,
conducted by a high power committee consisting of reputed academicians.
Social Work department was formed in the year of 2007, with the mission of preparing the students for
specialized, evidence and rights-based practice among the oppressed, at risk, vulnerable and general
populations. The programmes of the department provide rigorous intellectual base, opportunities for skill
development and a value-based educational experience. The department of Social Work is actively
involved in providing evidence-based, quality oriented social work education through most advanced
and emerging domains of practice, research and field interventions.
About DISHAA-13
DISHAA-13 is an annual academic conference which is intended for intellectual deliberations to
understand the current trends in the profession, to critically engage with the upcoming pressures and
challenges and to bring out potential output to equip the practitioners and trainees to become
effectual Social Workers of the country. It particularly stresses to impart Indian values to Social Work
Education and to mould the practitioners accordingly.
Concept Note
India is highly vulnerable to disasters. The vulnerability is due to the factors such as adverse geo-climatic
conditions, topographic features, environmental degradation, population growth, urbanization,
industrialization, flawed development practices, etc. Twenty Seven out of Thirty Five States and Union
Territories in the country are disaster prone. Almost 58.6 per cent of the landmass is prone to earthquakes
of moderate to very high intensity; over 40 million hectares (12 per cent of land) are prone to floods and
river erosion; of the 7,516 km long coastline, close to 5,700 km, is prone to cyclones and tsunamis; 68 per
cent of the cultivable area is vulnerable to drought. (NIDM,2012) Since 1900 to 2011, India has faced 590
natural disasters. In 2009, 1806 people were killed, 9.0 million people were affected by 15 natural disasters
that occurred in India. Economic losses due to disasters in the year 2009 in India were estimated to be 2.7
billion USD (SWC, 2012)
With respect to the increasing number of disasters and the complexities and unpredictability associated
with them, managing disasters becomes a tough job. The management aspect of disasters in the areas
like disaster preparedness, disaster mitigation, disaster response and recovery, disaster impact
assessment, psycho-social care, disaster risk management and community based disaster risk reduction
etc. demands significant roles for multiple stakeholders such as Governmental and Voluntary Agencies,
other Civil Society Organizations, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Communities etc. The Social Work which is
interdisciplinary in nature is having huge potential to work with these multi stakeholders in disaster
management.
The conference is looking forward to understand the current trends and dynamism in disaster
management, to look in to prospects of the future and to contribute into the policy making dialogues
