Cops draw flak over fund drive

A section of Manipur police has raised funds for cops facing a CBI inquiry into alleged fake encounter killings to meet expenses if those cases go to trial. The move has prompted sharp reactions from human rights groups in the state.
Rights groups today petitioned chief minister N. Biren Singh to take criminal proceedings against some police officials who have been collecting money from the rank and file of the state police department for fighting the cases of fake encounter killings now being probed by a special investigation team constituted by the CBI following orders from the Supreme Court.
