Consultation on Social Work Education in North East at TISS, Guwahati
26 March 2012
North-East Network on Social Work Education formed A two-day consultation on social work education in North-East India was held at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati Campus, on 23 and 24 March.
The consultation was attended by social work educators from across the region, who deliberated on problems confronting social work education in the region. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Vimla Nadkarni, of TISS, Mumbai, said that this meeting was being held towards formation of a National Network on Social Work Education, a process which was first started in 2005, with the goal of making social work education relevant to current social realities, and ensuring and sustaining quality of social work education programmes across the country.
This consultation for the North East Zone was meant to form a Task Force, with all the Task Forces eventually coming together in a national consultation in May, to discuss the National Proposal on the Network which will be submitted for funding to the UGC and Planning Commission. During the consultation, social work educators from across the states of the North-East shared their concerns with regard to ensuring quality social work education in the region.
Educators pointed out that while there has been a growth of social work education institutions in NE India, they face numerous problems in terms of funding, shortage of faculty, infrastructure and other resources. Also, there is a need to set minimum standards for social work education, as laid out in the National Curriculum in Social Work and the NAAC Manual on Social Work Education.
It was felt that regional and national networks on Social Work Education would help to correct these anomalies and also enable the passage of a National Social Work Council Bill, to regulate the profession of social work. Fr Jerry Thomas of Bosco Institute pf Social Work, Assam was unanimously chosen as the chair of North-East Zone Network Task Force, to which all institutions attending the meeting would nominate a member.
The Task Force comprises, among others, representatives from
Assam Central University, Silchar;
Don Bosco University, Guwahati,
TISS Guwahati Campus,
Bosco Institute,
LGBRIMH Tezpur,
Mizoram Central University;
St. Edmund's College, Shillong,
Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong;
IGNT University, Imphal, and
affiliated colleges.
