Congested stretch of Tera to Yurembam in New Cachar Road, NH-37
17th March, 2016:
Dangerously congested stretch of Tera to Yurembam in New Cachar Road, National Highway - 53
The portion of Imphal Jiribam Road, also known as New Cachar Road or National Highway- 53 (NH-37 in new numbering system), lying from Tera Oriental College Gate to Patsoi / Yurembam area is excessively congested with ever increasing volume of traffic.
Also, the unabated encroachments by the roadside dwellers, shops and business establishments and various vendors have also added to the problem so much so that even though the road is reasonably big, the travellers actually have a narrow lane to pass on.
No wonder the number of accidents are increasing day by day, often to the extent of fatalities or severe casualties. There are many accident prone spots at blind crossings and junctions as many populated areas / Leikais are located on both sides of the road.
It will not be an exaggeration to say that the number of accidents in this National Highway stretch far outnumber those in other main roads in Manipur.
Heavily loaded vehicles like Tata Tippers, trucks transporting goods and earth excavators of the numerous brick fields / contractors that ply every minute on this road at unreasonably high speeds have also taken a toll on the safety of the travellers of this road.
Morever, the fast moving vehicles of security personnel or paramilitary forces and VIPs also pose a great threat to the ordinary people on this road.
The reckless attitude of the drivers of such lorries and heavy vehicles needs no explanation as every onlooker would tell as an eyewitness. In fact, a grip of fear and apprehension lurks in the minds of the elderly travellers or pedestrians whenever they happen to cross the road.
Hence, the immediate attention of the authorities concerned, especially the Government of Manipur and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India is called for to find a long term solution to this grim and dangerous situation of traffic congestion in this stretch of National Highway 53 so that further avoidable casualties do not happen again.
Needless to mention here that road safety obviously needs meticulous planning and design of the road over and above safe driving.
Yours faithfully,
