Condoning Narco-traffickers
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: January 17 2013 -
The abolition of the one and only ever active Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) in the State just four days after a huge consignment of Pseudoephedrine tablets worth around Rs 1.4 cores were seized from Imphal Tulihal Airport has obviously raised some serious questions in the mind of the people.
Interestingly, the Inspector who had successfully led the SIU team in the operation too had been transferred a day after the seizure.
Even though the Inspector himself had taken extra care in trying to convince the people that the transfer order has got nothing to do with his latest successful drug haul from the airport, people have found it hard to chew and digest the clarification.
Even if the transfer order was claimed to have been issued on a date prior to the drug haul, why it was served to the valiant and dutiful Inspector just after his successful exploit in an unceremonial manner is perplexing.
This is one question that has been haunting the mind of the people. On the other hand, SP of Imphal West K Jayenta, who issued the order of abolishing 'the one and only ever active' Special Intelligence Unit (SIU) based in Imphal West district, has tried to dispel doubt maintaining that it was just an internal arrangement and nothing else.
But the question that still remains to be answered is why the urgency for such an internal arrangement has been felt at this critical juncture?
It's a well known fact that Manipur has been waging a long drawn battle against the menace of drugs which has made many of our youths in the prime of life turned into living death, and many social organisations have taken up the onus of not only to save the youths from prey to drug and also to rescue those who have lost themselves in a world of drug induced ecstasy.
However, the scourge of drugs continues to remain casting its menacing shadows over the future of Manipuri society in one form or the other.
Earlier, it was easy availability of heroin by virtue of close proximity of the State to the infamous 'Golden Triangle', from where Heroin is produced and smuggled out to other parts of the world and now the trends and patterns of drug trafficking has shifted gradually towards illicit synthetic drugs like ephedrine and pseudoephedrine.
In fact, seizure of large quantity of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine which were dispatched from other metro airports of the country on cargo flights in the form of consignments at Tulihal Airport, Imphal by SIU testifies that the battle against drug has taken a new avatar and it is far from over.
In such a situation, abolition of SIU, which has been doing a good job since its inception on May 6 last year is irrational and pregnant with meanings.
This has only convinced the people over possible involvement of many high profile individuals and officials in the drug cartel.
The State Government, and more particularly the department concerned, definitely ought to come up with some explanations that could convince the people if it really wants to find some takers.
Otherwise, it would amount to condoning narco-traffickers who are abusing the power vested upon them.
