No. 14/BJP-MP/Core/2012
Dated: Feb. 11th 2014
To,
Shri Dr. Manmohan Singh,
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India,
New Delhi.
Subject: Condemning the Racial attack against the North East communities in Delhi
Namaskar,
The issue of racial attack, followed by a series of attacks on the students and migrant communities from the North East region is not expected in a democratic country like ours. In the beginning it was hopeful that the problem would subside even though many unfortunate incidents of racism had occurred in the past, right in the capital city of the country. However, the number of such incidents of rapping, brutal killing, stabbing to death, eve teasing, and even using derogatory words to insult and instigate anger has increased tremendously in the capital city and other parts of the country in the recent past. This in turn has shown the shameful act of racial discrimination by people in the mainland to the people of North East region. This is not a good social indicator for a democratic and developing country like India. Rest of the world would condemn these acts and it would surely go against the goodwill of a country like India.
Justice is yet to be done on the issue of the death of Nido Tania, a youth from Arunchal Pradesh, who was brutally beaten up in the streets of Delhi in broad daylight on 29th January 2014 and the rape of a 14 year old girl from Manipur who was dragged through the bustling streets of Munrika in South Delhi on 8th February 2014. In the midst of all these more and more incidents of brutal assault and killing of the people of North East Region still continues unabated in the capital city of the country. In a city where more than 2 lakh people from the North East Region are either studying or working the rate of rapping, brutal killing, stabbing to death, eve teasing, and even using derogatory words to insult and instigate anger has increased and has in turn ignited the uncomfortable question of racism in India. There has been an alarming rate of violence perpetrated on the people of the North East Region solely targeted for their race and there has been a string of dangerous deaths which are not isolated occurrences but pattern that is emerging in an increasingly intolerant India.
The names of Richard Loitam, Dana Sangma, Ramchanphy Hongray and Reingamphi are all too familiar as these are various instances of death where JUSTICE HASNOT BEEN GIVEN. We are shocked to see such inhuman and barbaric acts of uncivilized section of the Indian society. In Delhi 87% of women from the North East Region have faced sexual harassment at least once or more than once during their stay in New Delhi which is exponentially high when compared to just 45% of women from Delhi who have faced sexual harassment more than once, as per the survey report in public domain.
Regardless of these barbaric incidents the present Central Govt., Delhi Govt., Delhi police and all the respective North East States elected representatives have not looked into the problem with seriousness and with an intention to solve the problem for once and all. This would surely increase the gap between the people of the North East India and the mainland India which will destroy the concept of bringing the people of the North East in the mainstream of the country.
Within these last two-three days, we are ashamed to learn that our boys and girls were being beaten in the streets of Delhi. In one of the latest incidents, two boys were beaten up seriously and another one was stabbed to death. These are very serious issues for which we the Citizen of India have to be responsible and solve these problems together for once and all, regardless of any political affiliation.
I as the President of the BJP Manipur Pradesh strongly condemn such racist happenings either in New Delhi or any part of the Country. I humbly submit that:
1. Justice should immediately be provided and the guilty persons for such recent incidents like the death Nido Tania, a youth from Arunchal Pradesh, where a Manipuri girl was raped, two boys from Manipur were beaten up seriously and another one was stabbed to death, should be punished in the strongest way possible. If not we worried such incidents might flare up another Bangalore where North Easterner were treated like a refugee in our home.
2. Its has been 66 years since India got Independence, however cases of racism against the people of North East Region continues to haunt us. In case we want to solve this problem of racism for once and all ,we should learn from developed countries like the United States of America , where a strong law is enforced against racism , where once the Colored People were treated as untouchables but can become even the President of the United States of America today. Thus we should introduce and pass an Anti-Racism Act in the Indian Parliament in order to enforce a law which calls for severest of punishment for the guilty on racism.
Today, BJP Manipur Pradesh have organized a Sit-in-Dharna at the State Party office to “Protest Against the racial Discrimination of North East Students in Metro Cities, particularly New Delhi” and protestors had raised slogans like “We want justice, Stop racial discrimination and we want United India” We want an Anti-Discrimination Law to be placed in the ongoing session of the Parliament.”
I, as a responsible Citizen of the country and the President of the BJP Manipur Pradesh, would request you to kindly take necessary action for safeguarding the dignity and identity of the people of the North East which in turn would preserve the UNITY IN DIVERSITY of our loving country. Your timely action on priority basis in this regard will be remembered by the people of the region
With Regards.
Yours Sincerely
(Th. Chaoba Singh)
President,
BJP, Manipur Pradesh
