Cleansing The Governance
- Hueiyen Lanpao Editorial :: December 08, 2014 -
Although allegations of corruption and misdeeds in various departments of Manipur Government often appear in the media, the unearthing of the scams and frauds do not follow the reports.
Prevention of corruption and fraud in public offices remains a far cry in Manipur, with the absence of an effective opposition in the Legislature, which can unfold the stealthy dirt.
In fact, numerical strength of the Congress legislators in the 60-member State Assembly has also made influence of other parties on the governance of the state negligible.
The ruling party has been left with enormous sway over its decisions and programmes. Hence, corruption and nepotism enjoy uncontrolled swing in Manipur.
Moreover, vigil of certain underground outfits on social development programmes, which had been hectic sometime a few decades ago, has also lost its presence nowadays.
It means that circumstances are ripe for cropping up of a number of scams and frauds which have apparently remained concealed in the present regime.
In Manipur, the Loktak Lake Phumdi clearance works were in the news for alleged involvement of fraudulent procedure.
However, neither the allegations have been proved, nor the culprits have been booked.
Again, the same government is alleged to be siphoning off funds for improvement of Khuman Lampak Sports complex.
The BJP leadership in Manipur has begun to enquire the alleged nexus between the government and the work agency Manipur Development Society (MDS).
A lot of other discrepancies are apparently being concealed for long, only because of the absence of strong oppositions.
Now the pertinent question is who are going to unearth the misdeeds in the governance.
For the time being, the BJP may well take the opportunity to put an eye on the working of the Manipur Government and rectify whatever misdeeds inherent in it.
In its course to cleansing of the strong-footed hegemony of the ruling Congress government, the BJP may be wise enough to take help from the Centre, which is also being ruled by another vocal and strong-footed leader Narendra Modi.
Politicians and administrators of Manipur, who have markedly been involved in misgivings and underhand fraudulent activities in their concerned areas of governance, have surely been awakened by the recent reports of Jayalalitha’s imprisonment in disproportionate properties case, and the very recent report of raids on Nagaland Minister by Vigilance Sleuths of the State.
Mind you all, the BJP Manipur Pradesh’s recent alarm on the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex issue may turn out to be the beginning of a comprehensive cleansing drive in Manipur.
