Cracking the Class XII stage : Looking beyond Imphal
- The Sangai Express Editorial :: May 09 2019 -
At 73.83 pass percentage it may not come anywhere close to the pass percentage of 83.49 of the Central Board of Secondary Education or the 96.52 success rate of the Council of Indian School Certificate Examination, which conducts the ISC (Class XII) examination.
However this is a marked improvement from the 67.04 pass percentage notched up in 2018 and the 68.81 pass percentage of 2017.
A marked improvement this surely is, but there is still a lot of improvement that can be made and this is where the schools that come under the Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur should concentrate on.
The Council can also look for ways on how to improve the performance of the young students in the years to come.
The difference in the pass percentage is what sets apart this year’s Class XII examination from the earlier two editions, but apart from this there is nothing much more to note.
All the top performers are from Imphal based schools and this is something which should be taken note of by the authority concerned.
Nothing wrong with this as such, but does this in any way reflect a reality that education is something which is taken seriously only by schools based in Imphal ?
Or is it a case of the parents, elders and the young students of Imphal taking their studies more seriously than their counter parts in other districts of the State ?
Or is it a case of good students from other districts also making a beeline for the schools located at Imphal ?
The answer may lie anywhere but it would serve the understanding of education better if excellence can be extended to students studying in schools at the other districts too.
In a few days time from now, the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur too will be announcing the results of the HSLC examination and to be sure the schools which have managed to hit the limelight with the showing of their students in the just announced Class XII examinations will be the destination for many of the bright students after their Class X.
This is where it will become interesting to watch the freebies that will be put on offer to attract the best students.
Competition not only amongst the students but also amongst the schools and this is surely encouraging.
But when this competition is understood through the freebies put on offer then a relook at the present practise may be needed.
For many who have just finished their Class XII examinations, this will just be the start for remember many of them must have started preparing for the different competitive examinations, NEET and the JEE being just two of such examinations.
For others it will be a case of looking at some of the finer colleges in other parts of the country and with the ISC and CBSE students in other parts of the country milking the marks, extremely high cut offs can be expected and this is where it can
become exasperating for many students.
With cut offs in some colleges, particularly in Delhi University, seemingly out of reach for many, the coming days could be tenseful.
To many of the young bright students, this is the time to look back, look forward and see what steps they take for the future that lies ahead of them.
