Civil society groups in state back Irom Sharmila's cause

Civil society groups in the state have come forward in support of Irom Sharmila Chanu, who has been on a fast for 11 years in Manipur, seeking repeal of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.
On Wednesday, several organizations here observed November 2 as "anti-black law" day and raised slogans demanding Sharmila's release and scrapping of the military act. About 100 women from different organizations formed a human chain at Ambari here to express solidarity with Sharmila.
Civil society and human rights groups have been observing November 2 as "anti-black law" day in protest against the killing of 10 people, including women and children, allegedly by Assam Rifles jawans at Malom village near Imphal airport in 2000. Anguished by the killings, Sharmila, whose supporters also call her as Iron Lady of Manipur, resorted to fast against AFSPA since then. She and her supporters claimed that AFSPA has given immunity to security forces engaged in counter-insurgency operations in Manipur.
People Forum for Democracy (PFD) and All Assam Sharmik Krishak Kalyan Parishad started a 24-hour fast here on Wednesday as a mark of support for Sharmila. "We went to Manipur to meet Sharmila, but the government did not allow us. Our effort is to evoke response from the people of Assam against AFSPA," said Bivek Das of PFD.
