Centre urged to repeal AFSPA : North East Dialogue Forum

The North East Dialogue Forum, a conglomeration of civil society and rights groups of the North East, has asked the Union Government to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), reasoning that the ‘draconian law’ is aggravating the plight of women in Manipur.
The joint forum said that country is seeking enhancing of women's safety, it is ironical that in the North East women’s safety is at risk from the very security forces that are meant to protect them. “The adamancy enjoyed by the armed personnel is now reflecting on the common men as well,” said Sobita Mangsatabam of the Forum on Wednesday, informing that altogether 27 rape cases were reported in Manipur in the year 2012 compared to preceding year’s total of 13 cases..
