One of the popular course or career opportunities among young people is mass communication. Mass communication is the study of how people and entities relay information through mass media to large segments of the population at the same time.
It is usually understood to relate newspaper, magazine, and book publishing, as well as radio, television and film, even via internet as these mediums are used for disseminating information, news and advertising. There has been tremendous change in this profession due to advancement of science and technology which brings more challenges and opportunities amongst people.
As a course this is related to journalism but there are some differences between both. Public relations and advertising are also part of this which is taught in some of the leading institute of the country.
One may undergo bachelor or masters courses related to journalism and mass communication. Students from any stream may join courses related to mass communication. There are diplomas and advance diplomas related to same.
Most of the universities offer courses related to this field and one of the leading institutes is Indian Institute of Mass Communication which has a campus at Aizwal in Mizoram apart from other places.
There are many job opportunities in different areas starting from media houses, corporate, government organisation and also nongovernmental organisation. We could see Public Relation Division/Departments in government organisations like Indian Railways, Public Sector Units, etc. International agencies like United Nations also employ people in their communication departments.
Apart from joining any services or agencies one may start working independently as consultants and others. With the increase of population there would be more opportunities in this field but one need to have proper planning and academic qualification.
