Cardamom cultivation to boost economy of Senapati farmer
Nagaland Post | Imphal Feb 7 ()
When collection of wild cardamom from jungle for consumption and selling in the market is becoming a thing of past, farmers in Manipur’s Senapati district have started cultivating the queen of spice. Wild cardamom is growth in the jungle of Senapati district from time immemorial and people used to collect the ripe cardamom from the jungle for consumption.
During the ripening season (September and October) people collect it from the jungle and use it as fruit. The wild cardamom capsule is now sold in the Senapati market where people consume as fruit. However, with the rapid increase in population coupled with expansion Jhum cultivation that leads to the fast diminishing of forest coverage, the collection of the ripe fruit from the jungle has become a thing of past.
