The story of Ethel Grimwood, a young woman in an Indian uprising
|
The Book
'Poor Mrs Grimwood has lost everything she ever possessed... I gave her the Royal Red Cross, which pleased her very much, and pressed her hand and kissed her when she left. Poor thing, I pity her so much!' Queen Victoria
Aged only 21, Ethel Grimwood accompanied her husband Frank to Manipur in remote north-east India, where he had been posted as Political Agent, and where they quickly made friends with the Royal family. Two years after their arrival the young couple were caught up in an unexpected and violent uprising against the British by the Royal Princes.
Calamity and Courage is the exciting tale of Ethel Grimwood's bravery, endurance and escape in the nightmare that followed. It also tells of the extraordinary emotional attachment she retained for the prince who organised the rebellion.
'The Manipur tragedy was an imperial drama of blunder and bravery, of bizarre folly and unusual fortitude. Belinda Morse has recounted the saga with insight, skill and sympathy.' David Gilmour, author of The Ruling Caste: Imperial Lives in the Victorian Raj.
The Author
Belinda Morse is the great-granddaughter of Victorian artist John Hanson Walker, who exhibited his portrait of Ethel Grimwood at the Royal Academy a year after her heroic part in the events surrounding the 'Manipur disaster'. She has written a biography of her great-grandfather and also A Woman of Design, A Man of Passion (Book Guild, 2001), a joint biography of Fanny and Ronald McIan, pioneering Victorian artists. She helped Sam Wanamaker in the early stages of the building of the Globe theatre, where she served several years as a trustee. In addition to being a writer, she is a keen art historian and gardener.
