CORE attended Scientific Symposium of IRCT at Mexico City
8 December 2016, Mexico City
The Centre for Organisation Research & Education (CORE) Manipur attended the Xth Scientific Symposium of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) that concluded its three days’ sessions in Mexico City on 7th December 2016 with the theme “Delivering on the Promise of the Right to Rehabilitation”.
Held in the backdrop of the picturesque high southern end of the plateau of Anáhuac, at an altitude of 7,800 ft (2,380 m), with the peaks of Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl not far off, over 300 delegates and practitioners of the treatment and rehabilitation of torture victims, academics and artists worldwide gathered here to share and learn from the new frontiers of “torture medicine”.
CORE Manipur, a member of the IRCT since the year 2001, made an oral presentation on “THE APPLICABILITY OF CREATIVE MOVEMENT THERAPIES IN THE HEALING PROCESS OF TORTURE VICTIMS IN A CONFLICT SCENARIO IN MANIPUR, INDIA”, which was delivered by Dr. Debabrata Roy Laifungbam, the President of the Elders’ Council.
The symposium reflected upon the disappointing perpetuation of the internationally prohibited practice of torture by states across the globe despite their commitments. A serious concern was raised, too, on how the debate on the “justification of torture” was re-emerging in the modern world today.
As a global membership based organisation, the IRCT reiterated its continued position of commitment in action for holistic rehabilitation services delivery as a promise to be kept by citizens of the world and to strengthen the global movement for the eradication of torture.
