TODAY -
But shining on stage and stadia
Times of India | TNN | Oct 16, 2011, 07.23AM IST
It may have now become synonymous with militancy, but the rest of India is well aware of Manipur's stellar achievements in sport, arts and culture. The state has, through the decades, produced great thinkers, intellectuals, playwrights, dancers and sportspersons. And continues to do so today.
Stage personalities like Ratan Thiyam and Kanhailal have made their mark at the international level. The state has several theatre clubs. Prof Lokendra Arambam, who taught theatre at New Delhi's JNU, says this passion remains undimmed among youngsters even in these troubled times. Manipur is known for pioneering many experimental theatre forms.
Sport is the other big passion. Daybreak in Imphal presents a fascinating sight: thousands of people from all age groups and backgrounds flock to the sprawling Khuman Lampak sports complex and the nearby Kangla Fort, the seat of Manipur's erstwhile rulers.
Manipuris' love for sport is evident in their sportspersons' rich medal haul at national meets.
No religious ceremony in Manipur is complete without a display of its indigenous sports. Major events like the annual Sir Churachand Memorial Invitation Football Tournament are public holidays. And people actually go to witness and cheer sportspersons at such events.
For many of them perhaps, Manipur's glorious heritage offers some respite from a hopeless situation.
