Bur Dubai first landed
Shongminthang Haokip *
Westward, beyond the largest continent
To the onshore isles of Arab;
Mid way between Europe and Asia
The Gulf coastline with fine sandy beaches
And the majestic rolling dunes of Emirates
Charm’d the much excited eyes of mine
Gazed down from the five star Airliner
I have no words with wonder
Seeing the magnificent land of desert
With no hills, trees and forests picturesque
Surrounded by the laping waves of the Arabian sea
Where lavish, outlandish or modernity embodied for
The then home of nomadic cattle herders
Is no more remember’d in this city of vibrancy
And yet there are still camels roaming free
Crossing a few miles of this elegant desert.
The warm hospitality of the man-made islands
To the young poet is eventful, with care'd
Indeed, memorable in this city of extravaganza
Healing the exausted journey from a thousand miles.
