Birds in the Spring
K. Radhakumar *
Sometimes I dreamt about animals.
I had seen white tigers
And many strange animals in the zoo.
A happy childhood I had.
One day I saw a bird’s nest
With two colourful eggs in it.
It was simply beautiful
And had been designed
To blend in with the surroundings.
I did not spend the moment philosophizing
On the meaning of life and death
Of creation and end of the world
And of my place in the cosmos.
I did not at all think –
I was myself.
One fateful rainy day!
Outside it was dark
And suddenly on the stroke of midnight
I heard a strange sound
And saw a strange light.
It was dark
And the moonless sky loomed up ahead of me.
But I saw (not with my eyes)
And I heard
Through the echoing walls of my bedroom.
Sometimes I could smell spring in the air.
Not always.
It is not
I had a good sense of smell
Like a dog.
At such moments
I looked at my beloved's eyes
And she exuded femininity.
