Battle of Red Hill aka Point 2926' Commemorated on May 29, 2014
"Battle of Red Hill aka Point 2926", one of the bloodiest hand to hand combat during the Battle of Imphal during 2nd World War was commemorated today at Maibam Lotpa Ching , Nambol, Bishnupur District, Manipur. The battlefield is popularly known as the Maibam Lotpa Ching among the local populace.
The function was organised as a part of the three month long observation of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal WW-II by the Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation.
In the commemoration function, Shri V.K. Duggal, H.E. the Governor of Manipur, Shri O.Ibobi Singh, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Manipur, Shri N. Loken Singh, Hon'ble MLA, Dr. Th. Dhabali Singh, Convenor, Shri Arambam Angamba, Co-convenor attended as Chief Guest, President and Guests of Honour respectively. Shri Mitsuhito Ito, son of WW2 Japanese soldier, who is also the Managing Director of Toray Industries (India) Pvt. Limited also attended function as special guest.
In his speech, Shri V.K. Duggal said "the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal fought during the 2nd World War has opened a fresh chapter in Manipur. It not only brings out the importance of Manipur in the history of the 2nd World War but also attempts to bring international map. This effort will bring together the two sides and will be a platform for reconciliation, love and peace". He also urged the Chief Minister to start preparatory work for commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Imphal which can be marketed not only in India but internationally also.
Shri O. Ibobi Singh said that the Battle of Imphal is a story about our own people of Manipur. We have heard of countless tales from our own parents and grandparents of that dramatic period when we found ourselves in the midst of one of the greatest battle of the WW-II.

He further mentioned that from this fascinating chapter of our own history which is uniquely connects us to many countries around the world. The 70th Anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Imphal in 2014 is a key step in this regard.
He said that Manipur its heritages and assets cemeteries, museum, memorial, battlefield, airfields, bunkers and trenches can be much interest to people from around the world. It will not just for those soldier family but also the even for other such as students, military enthusiasts, tourist interested in history, general tourists, etc. The state government will support in preserving these heritage site as well as to promote the tourist potential of the state, Shri O. Ibobi said.
A floral tribute was also offered at the India Peace Memorial located at the foothill of the Red Hill.
The Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Battle of Imphal was inaugurated on March 23, 2014 will be concluded on June 28, 2014. The programmes to be oraganised before the concluding functions are Battle of Motbung on June 7, Lift of Imphal Siege/Milstone 109 on June 22, Battle of Bishnupur on June 12 and Silchar Track on June 25. The series of event is being organized by Manipur Tourism Forum and 2nd World War Imphal Campaign Foundation with the support of Government of Manipur.
