Shri Bachaspatimayum Jayantakumar Sharma, born in 1935 at Brahmapur Nahabam Bachaspati Leikai, Imphal, is a celebrated lyricist and a noted Manipuri writer whose contributions have stood out as a beacon for modern Manipuri music.
Retired as Assistant Station Director, AIR, Kohima, Shri Sharma has scripted about 1300 songs, besides penning and producing several musical features and radio plays for AIR.
His lyrics, known for their soul-searching and poetic diction, have not only stood the test of time but have also become a source of inspiration for the present day lyricists.
Shri Sharma has also been closely associated with development and promotion of modern Manipuri music. He is a founder-member of several cultural organisations including Roop Raag, Sangeet Mandal, All Manipur Music Association and AMMIK and has played a key role in all the endeavours of these organisations.
Besides these, he has also published thirteen books, including lyrical poetries, to his credit. And as a resource person, he has written several research papers and articles on Manipuri music.
His long term contributions have been honoured with several awards and recognitions including Manipur Statehood Award for Culture, Akashvani Award for Exemplary Service and Lifetime Achievement Award conferred by AMMIK.
For his exemplary contributions in the field of Manipuri music, Shri Bachaspatimayum Jayantakumar Sharma is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademii Award.
