Akademi Award: Literature (Translation)
Born in 1941, Shri Aribam Kumar Sharma of Wangkhei Thambalkhong, Imphal, is a noted translator and academician who has also carved out a respectful niche in the realm of Manipuri literary criticism.
With an M.A. degree from Calcutta University, Shri A.K. Sharma took up teaching as a profession.
He became Head, Department of Manipuri, G.P. Women’s College in 1967 and also served as Reader in Manipuri, D.M. College of Teacher Education.
In between he had served as Part Time Lecturer and Visiting Professor at the University level.
Carrying the experience of an academic career spanning over 33 years, he went to become Additional Director, Dept, of Education (University and Higher Education), Govt, of Manipur.
Beyond his professional career, he has been associated with multiple literary organisations including Sahitya Akademi, The Cultural Forum, Manipur, and Writers’ Forum, Imphal.
As a writer, he has published four books of translation, two works of literary criticism, and a collection of poems. As translator, he translates from Hindi and English to Manipuri.
His Manipuri translation of Subodh chandra Sengupta’s Sharatchandra: Man and Artist entitled Sharat chandra is a fine example of the translator’s mastery over the art of translation.
A fruitful and an honest translation, this painstaking effort of the translator has been appreciated for its fine translation methodology and loyalty to the original language.
Another of his work Numiiki Taretshuba Sagol - Manipuri translation of Dr Bharati’s novel Surajka Satwang Ghora - won him the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize, 2003.
For his noteworthy contribution to Manipuri literature and for his translation, Sharatchandra, Shri Aribam Kumar Sharma is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
