JTCDM Post Doctoral & Doctoral Research Fellowships - 2009 - 2010
The Jamsetji Tata Centre for Disaster Management (JTCDM) is one of the unique centres at
Tata Institute of Social Sciences, conducting advanced research in varied areas of disaster
management in South Asia. The Centre aims at bridging the gap between the natural,
engineering and social sciences by emphasizing people-centered, participatory and holistic
disaster management approaches. Possessing a strong interface with the public,
administrators, and managers involved in disaster management, the Centre also aims at
enhancing our understanding of disasters and explore practices that contribute to dynamic
decision making and effective policy implementation.
The Jamsetji Tata Centre for Disaster Management offers a limited number of Research
Fellowships at both the doctoral (three) and postdoctoral (two) levels for the 2009 - 10
academic year. These are to support advanced research and writing in the field of disaster
management.
Post Doctoral Research/Writing Fellowship
Broad Areas for Post Doctoral Research/Writing:
* Sociology of Disasters
* Human Ecology and Disasters
* Social Science Perspectives on Disaster Health and Mental Health
Terms of the Fellowship:
* The fellow can request support
* to turn a dissertation (in the areas mentioned above) into a publishable manuscript
* to prepare shorter publications based on the doctoral project (in the areas mentioned above).
* propose any research or writing project in the above mentioned areas.
* The fellows are provided with shared office space and a computer
* Access to all TISS academic, institutional, and recreational resources.
* Monthly stipend of Rs. 30,000/- for one year
* One time contingency grant of Rs. 40,000/-
* Research Expense not exceeding 1 lakh (As per the budget approved by the selection committee)
* The fellow is expected to adhere to the time schedule s/he proposes. Any change should be notified in advance.
* There will be an advisory committee for each project. The committee will facilitate the work of the fellow. S/he is expected to keep in touch with the committee on a regular basis and discuss and share her/his work at every stage.
* Fellow is expected to contribute to the academic activities of the JTCDM
Doctoral Research Fellowship
The doctoral fellow will receive support for his/her Ph.D at TISS in any of the below mentioned areas:
Broad Areas for Pre Doctoral Research:
* Culture, Society and Disaster Management
* Environmental Change, Livelihoods and Disasters
* Governance and Disaster Response
* Media, Society and Disasters
* Public Health and Mental Health in Disaster Situations
* Migration, Vulnerability and Urbanisation in Disaster Zones
* Conflicts, Peace and Development
* GIS and Remote Sensing in Disaster Management
Terms of the fellowship:
* Securing Ph.D admission at TISS is mandatory
* The applicant should have completed MPhil or has 4 to 5 years of relevant field experience.
* Those receiving any other scholarship will not be eligible for the JTCDM fellowship.
* The doctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the academic activities of the JTCDM as well as carry out
Institutional responsibilities whenever required.
* Monthly stipend of Rs. 12,000/- for three years
* Contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year for three years
Application Process
In order to be considered for the Post doctoral fellowship applicants are required to provide curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and details of two referees.
Accompanied by a research/writing proposal in not more than 2000 words. This should include the background, nature, importance, specific objectives, methodology, time line, budget (only for post doctoral fellowship not exceeding 100,000 Rs) and outcome. The due
date for receiving applications as a soft copy is November 15th, 2009 for Post Doctoral Fellowships.

Applicants for the doctoral fellowships are expected to fill the application for PhD available on the TISS website and enclose a proposal in the subject areas mentioned above. Applicants will follow the Ph.D admission process as mentioned on website.
The application has to be accompanied with a Demand Draft for Rs. 750. The rules for SC and ST students are
applicable. The due date for receiving applications for Doctoral Fellowships is October 30th, 2009.
