edition one: curtain raiser
Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northeastern India. It is also called the only "floating lake" in the world due to the floating phumdi (floating vegetation) on it. It was designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention on March 23, 1990.
75% of the people of Manipur are fish consumers and 60% of the state's substantial fish comes from Loktak Lake. The lake is also a rich habitat of a variety of indigenous fish, algae and vegetables. The Keibul Lamjao National Park which is a 40sq.km contiguous stretch of phumdi is the last natural refuge of the Manipur brow-antlered deer (Cervus eldi eldi) locally known as the Sangai. The park is also the only floating National Park in the world.
But urbanization, pollution is drastically changing the eco-cycle of the water body and its features. The size of the lake is decreasing day by day. All the rare species of indigenous fish and vegetables are vanishing. The phumdi or floating marshy grass is filling up the lake as the natural cleansing process is blocked by construction of dams.
Ranbir Thouna, one of the most popular singer/composer of Manipur knowing its relative importance launches 'The Loktak music campaign' to create awareness to save the lake for our future generation. It is to be noted that Ranbir Thouna has 24 music albums to his credit; 14 personal albums and 10 as music director for feature films.
Her royal highness princess MK Binodini is the chairman & convener of the campaign. She is a Padmashree and a writer of short stories, novels and screenplays of award winning Manipuri feature films.
