After a Long Slumber
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Padmakumar *
On the horizon of light and shade
One day I saw
A scene quite early in your play
Which is beyond me.
I began
As the starting point of my journey
At a place away from family home,
Like a static image on a screen
Began its movement.
I saw everything I had seen earlier
What a beauty! And such a beauty
Never had I seen in this life.
I thought of nothing in particular
But had the rare pleasure of enthusiasm
Of going to a new place.
O Creator!
I have just begun
To appreciate the meaning within a meaning
Of the secrets of your play
Though I had the pleasure of enjoying it
When I was quite a child.
The Creation – this your making
What hidden depths what effortless artistry!
I cannot but believe what experience says
The messenger of the god of Death
Cannot openly take away the life of a child
Before the very eyes of its parents.
