Advani mulls apology for NSCN truce limit
The Telegraph | Khelen Thokchom Imphal, Nov. 12:
BJP leader L.K. Advani is all set to tender an “apology” to the people of Manipur for clearing extension of the NSCN (I-M) ceasefire “without territorial limits” that triggered a violent agitation in Imphal, leading to the death of 18 people during the upheaval in June 2001.
The ceasefire extension agreement, which took place on June 14 in Bangkok between representatives of the Centre and NSCN (I-M), popularly known in Manipur as “Bangkok Declaration”, triggered a violent upheaval in the state capital because the ceasefire boundary was extended without any territorial limits. Eighteen people lost their lives in the government crackdown on mobs who burnt the Assembly building, chief minister’s secretariat and many other government buildings on June 18 the same year.
People of Manipur felt the extension of the ceasefire to Manipur was a threat to the state’s territorial integrity as the NSCN (I-M)’s agenda was to bring all contiguous Naga-inhabited areas under one administrative unit.
