Admissions Process
January 24, 2013: Applications are submitted to Master’s and doctoral programs (NOTE: Erasmus Mundus programs such as MESPOM and Mundus MAPP follow a different timeline, as does the CEU Business School.) Following an initial review by the Admissions Office, applications are either formally received (i.e. passed on for academic evaluation) or rejected for formal reasons.
February 16, 2013: Standard English and other applicable test (such as GRE for some Economics and Mathematics programs) score reports must be received by the Admissions Office latest by this date.
February 16, 2013: Some CEU departments and schools provide their own entrance examinations at CEU testing locations. Applicants who apply for any CEU-administered admissions tests will be notified of the practical arrangements by the local CEU representatives organizing the testing.
o Economics: Mathematics Test
o Legal Studies: Legal Reasoning Test and Legal Essay
o Mathematics: Mathematics examination
o Medieval Studies: Supplementary examination
For those programs that do not offer their own exams, individual interviews may take place, either by Skype or telephone.
Late March, 2013 (date TBA): The CEU-administered TOEFL examination (and, for Political Science MA applicants, the Test of Writing Ability) takes place at the CEU testing locations. Please note: only those candidates proposed for admission or placed on the waiting list will be invited.
April 1, 2013: The final admissions decisions are made available to candidates via the online application system. Each decision is made by a departmental selection committee on the basis of the candidate’s past academic achievement, strength of recommendations, English language competency, intellectual merit, work experience (if applicable), expectations of the program, future plans, and general compatibility with the goals of the department or school.
CEU does not provide information about candidates’ admission progress before this date. Candidates’ information (including test results) is confidential and only available to the candidate concerned.

Track your status
In order to learn the status of your application to CEU, please login to your online application, and click "Track your status". The status messages you may see displayed in your application are explained below.
Please note that in case you have applied to multiple programs, you will have a separate decision shown in each application you have submitted.
Admission Decision:
1. Preliminary review:
Passed First Review means your application has met the formal requirements and been forwarded to the department or school concerned for academic assessment.
Denied After First Review means your application has been rejected for formal reasons, typically because it is missing a required item such as a reference, transcript, etc. Please note this decision only applies to the specific application in which it is posted; if you have submitted applications for multiple programs, you will need to check each of them for the relevant decision. Note also that this decision is final and not subject to revision or appeal. CEU does not make known the reason(s) why an application is rejected.
2. Final admission decision (by April 1, 2013):
Accepted means you have been accepted for that particular program in which you see it posted.
You will receive a formal offer of admission with full details of the financial aid award, if any, displayed underneath the admission decision.
Conditionally accepted means you are being proposed for admission pending your CEU-administered ITP-TOEFL result. If you achieve the minimum score required for the program you have applied for, your status will be changed for “accepted”.
Denied means you have been denied admission due to academic reasons for that particular program in which you see it posted. Please note this decision only applies to the specific application in which it is displayed; if you have submitted applications for multiple programs, you will need to check each of them for the relevant decision. Note also that this decision is final and not subject to revision or appeal. CEU, like other graduate schools, does not make known the reasons why an application is rejected.
Waitlisted means that you may be admitted if another accepted applicant chooses not to attend CEU. Waitlisted candidates may receive an offer of admission between April and June 30th (if they need a visa to Hungary) or the beginning of the academic year (if they do not need a visa). Please note that for a variety of reasons, we are not able to provide information about your chances of acceptance.
Decision Pending means the academic department you have applied to has yet to make a final decision about your application.
Financial Aid (by April 1, 2013): You will see here any financial aid you have applied for and been awarded. If you applied for a specific type of financial aid and received an offer with an alternate or no financial aid package, you are automatically waitlisted for the package you requested, whether you accept the first offer or not. If additional financial aid becomes available because other admitted students are unable to attend, you will be notified. Such notifications may take place any time before (but not after) the beginning of the academic year. For now, you are only expected to respond to the current offer with the outlined terms and conditions; in case you choose to decline it for financial reasons, this will not affect your place on the waiting list. Please note, however, that due to the nature of waiting lists, there is no guarantee that additional financial aid will become available.
Waitlisted for (by April 1, 2013): You will see here any financial aid you have applied and been waitlisted for.
English Testing Decision:
CEU-Admin TOEFL means you will be invited for the CEU-administered institutional TOEFL exam. You will shortly receive an email message with full details such as time, venue, etc. from the Admissions Office (if you opted to take the test in Budapest) or a local CEU representative organizing the testing (if you selected any other testing location).
English Test Submitted means the English test score you have submitted has been accepted (please note you will need to turn in an official score report if you are admitted.)
English Test Required means you have yet to submit a valid and acceptable English test score (please see here the acceptable tests and minimum score requirements.) You will also see this decision if your request for exemption from the English testing requirement has been denied based on the relevant university policy and program requirements, and/or the level of English demonstrated in your application materials.
English Test Waived means you have been granted exemption from standardized English testing.
Program Specific Testing:
N/A (standing for Not Applicable) means there is no program-specific testing required for the program.
Departmental Exam means you will be invited for the CEU-administered program-specific entry exam. You will shortly receive an email message with full details such as time, venue, etc. from the Admissions Office (if you opted to take the test in Budapest) or a local CEU representative organizing the testing (if you selected any other testing location). Please also refer to the relevant departmental web pages for further information.
Standard Test Submitted means the standard test score you have submitted has been accepted (please note you will need to turn in an official score report if you enroll at CEU.)
Standard Test Required means you have yet to submit a valid standard test score required for the program you are seeking admission to. Please refer to the relevant departmental web pages for details.
Alternative Testing: some departments offer alternative testing options to their candidates. Please refer to the relevant departmental website for details.
Mailed Reference 1– 3: If your references were provided online through the Embark application systems, this field will say: “No current status. Please check back later.” In this case, you can check the “Recommendations” section of the online application to see the status of the online recommendations. If your references have been sent by postal mail, this field will show the name of the referee and indicate that the letter has been uploaded.
Acceptance by Order of Student Choice
Candidates may apply to two separate CEU departments, and must indicate their preferred and alternate department in all their applications. If an applicant is rejected by their preferred department, but accepted by the alternate one they will be offered admission by the alternate department. If the applicant is accepted by both, an admission offer will be made by the preferred department, not both. In exceptional cases, and upon written justification, applicants may be permitted to change the order of their preference – notifying the CEU Admissions Office by February 16, 2013.
