The Indian Institute of Science, a leading institution of higher learning with a strong tradition of research for over a century, is opening its portals to undergraduate students by launching a four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) Programme. The programme is designed as a balanced blend of core science and interdisciplinary topics, to serve as a launching pad for research and doctoral studies in cutting-edge areas in science and technology. The graduates will also be ready for attractive career opportunities in academia and industry.
ACADEMIC STRUCTURE OF THE BS PROGRAMME
* The BS Programme is a four-year programme organized into eight semesters. The final two semesters are devoted exclusively to a research project.
* Six major disciplines are offered: Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Materials, Mathematics, and Physics.
* For a well balanced and well rounded learning experience, each student is required to take a minimum number of courses in engineering and humanities.
* The programme is designed to provide a deep interdisciplinary experience to the students.
* Semesters 1,2,3: A systematic exposure to the pillars of classical, scientific, mathematical and engineering principles will take place during the first three semesters. Teaching of these, designated as core courses, will include substantial components of laboratory demonstrations and hands-on experiments. In each of these semesters, the students are expected to study one course each in physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, engineering and humanities.
* Semesters 4,5,6: After the first three semesters, students choose a subject for specialisation designed to cater to their vocational interest. Specialisations on offer are:
(1) Biology
(2) Chemistry
(3) Environmental Science
(4) Materials
(5) Mathematics
(6) Physics.
All streams are interdisciplinary. While the students specialise in a stream, he/she can also broaden his/her knowledge and skills by taking about 30% of the courses from other streams. In each semester, the students also take one elective course in engineering and one seminar course in humanities.
* Semesters 7,8: A research project will be started in the seventh semester along with specialized courses and the final semester will be exclusively devoted to this project. The knowledge gained and skills developed in the first three years will be applied in order to formulate questions on scientific issues, explore answers to these questions, and communicate them to experts and general audience.
