About the Panelists
Ambassador Doraiswami joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1992. Among others, he was India's
Ambassador to Uzbekistan and to the Republic of Korea; Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa; and
Political Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York. He also served as
Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India.
Ambassador Bhatia played a key role in strengthening India's Track-II research and outreach activities as
Director General of the Indian Council of World Affairs from 2012-2015. During a 37-year innings in the Indian
Foreign Service, he served as Ambassador to Myanmar and Mexico and as High Commissioner to Kenya and
South Africa. He dealt with a part of South Asia, while posted as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External
Affairs. He is the author of a book titled 'India-Myanmar Relations: Changing contours'.
Dr. Naidu specializes in Asia Pacific issues, including Southeast Asian security, Japanese foreign and security
policies, Asian multilateralism, maritime security, political economy of East Asia, and India's relations with
East Asia. His visiting appointments/fellowships include Research Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian
Studies, Singapore; Visiting Fellow at the East-West Center, Honolulu; and Visiting Fellow at the Japan Institute
of International Affairs, Tokyo.
Dr. Ao's area of interests include the study on Southeast Asia and India's relations with the ASEAN states, in
particular the evolving political, economic and security engagements. He hails from the Nagaland state of
Northeast India, and holds a PhD in International Relations from School of International Studies, Jawaharlal
Nehru University.
Ambassador Mukhopadhaya retired from government service in May 2016 after 36 years in the Indian Foreign
Service, serving in various capacities in Indian Embassies in Mexico (1982), France (handling the Festival of
India in France, 1985-86), Cuba (1986-89), and the Permanent Mission of India in New York (1996-99), the
Ministries of External Affairs and Defence in India, and as Ambassador of India in Syria (Dec 2005-Jan 2009),
Afghanistan (Jul 2010-May 2013) and Myanmar (Jun 2013-May 2016).
