A String of Pearls
K. Radhakumar *
In my younger days
My muse of poetry
Suddenly appeared from nowhere
And I wrote on the finer things of life.
Not anymore. Not today.
Today of all days
She is divorcing me.
Strangely enough
I am neither sorry nor sad
About the gathering of the storm in the sky
For poetry or rather my poetry
Blaze with impotent rage only
Unable to do anything
To denuclearize the world.
At this rate
The world will end in fire.
The world to end in fire?
Goodness me, no!
The girl with all her desires
Looking at her boyfriend
And looking at the world
Through her elegant eyelashes –
If you want to see a beautiful thing
Look, here is one.
It is her first love
Her first dream
And she has a great future ahead of her.
I say no to nuclear weapons
For young girls
All dressed in virginal white
Sing and dance and make merry;
The play of their lives is set in the future
In a bright future.
I am not the poor versifier
Who would steal
Sweet little dreams
Of our lovely young souls
The beautiful inhabitants
Of the wonderful world.
