A Sad Story
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
Paro does not like,
Does not like at all
Her Devada drinking to death.
Why should my love take to drink
And die down like a star
At the crack of dawn.
Dawn to dusk is quite a way to go -
I have a wonderful time here,
People have been simply wonderful,
Life is wonderful,
Absolutely wonderful.
Morning!
Ah, there you are.
The virgin of life!
The broad face of the morning is a picture
As she learns
Of my friend's untimely death.
The morning rises early
Wearing the exotic daybreak gear
And of all the celestial bodies
Only the sun remains
To burn holes in the dew-soaked burkha
And caress the bloom in the cheeks of the morning.
Hello, sunshine!
In the morning sunshine
My friend is greatly missed.
Life is not always on the up and up
It has its ups and downs;
Whenever my friend is feeling a bit down
He goes out and gets drunk.
I want to appeal to his better nature:
Life is full of mischief,
Worldly life can be intoxicating,
We are too dependent on man-made substances
And in so doing
We have committed a crime against nature.
Paro's efforts to stop her Devada drinking -
It is a waste of effort
He eventually dies of drink.
The globe turns
Without my friend
Who drowns his loneliness,
His sorrows in stiff drink.
The globe turns
And does not stop breathing even for a moment
To salute my drunken friend
On his way to the grave.
And the globe turns
For the mourning period is over
And my friend is finally dead.
