A Message for Heaven
- Deep from the Soul -
K. Radhakumar *
There was a time
When life made sense.
It is not that I cry
For a lost world;
Age has its own reward.
I know life understands me
And always gives me a smile of acknowledgement
Whenever I am feeling really low.
There was no yesterday then.
And tomorrow!
Certainly, it was there
All bright and sunny.
Now sometimes I think about
The fairness of life
The absurdity of the situation I am in
The identity crisis
The deadening effect of bad habits!
One of my friends tried to give up drinking
But just could not kick the habit
And died of liver cirrhosis.
Lamphel of my childhood days!
It was a field covered in grass
And was used by the local people
To graze domestic cattle.
Quite a few buffaloes and ponies
Were also seen grazing on the lush grass.
In the afternoon it was windswept
And we sent messages to our kites
Through shreds of paper along the strings.
My lovely countryside!
I pined for the countryside of my childhood days.
Now it has been swallowed by the changing times
And a town has come up.
The lovely meadow of yesteryear!
It has provided a dramatic backdrop
For my present predicament
For my loss of sense of humour
And also for my loss of sense of direction.
Though I am amply rewarded
And I do not miss much
I must say
There was a time
When life made sense.
