A Halo of a Dream
K. Radhakumar *
I have a dream,
A dream
More real than reality itself.
I lie awake all night
I can hear crickets chirping
And also stray night birds
Suddenly waking from sleep.
I am pretty sure
I do not sleep a wink
And believe me, I dream.
I do not dream
While I am asleep,
I do dream
While I am wide awake.
The whole night
He staggers drunkenly
Talks to himself
Then to the moon
And then to the passers-by.
Not everything is all right, he cries.
Not everything is all right.
He dimly remembers his only son
Who was killed in an absurd car accident.
He is now totally drunk and disorderly
And is caught by the police
For brawling in the street.
Do you think
The morning will be
As sober as a judge?
Why do I dream?
I do not know
But dream I do.
It is not the east of life alone that dreams
The west also dreams.
It appears man is not only a thinking thing
But also a dreaming thing
And I dream my life away.
He remembers his childhood days
He knows drink rots his liver
He knows he is dying
In the halo of a dream called life.
There is nothing special about it.
There is nothing special about it.
The road ahead is dark
And the road behind is dark
Even in the daytime.
