A Day Is Passed Away
K. Radhakumar *
From a height
The hawk has
A bird's eye view
Of the grey waters below.
The hawk swoops down
On the shoals of fish
And catches one.
(An unfortunate accident!)
It appears
The hawk faces no difficult choice.
And the victim!
It is a prize specimen
Of a race of fish.
The hawk holds the fish
In its beak
Before it perches comfortably
On the sinewy branch of a nearby tree
And the fish is passed on to
The clutches of the talon.
Oh! There is no escape to another world.
The hawk helps itself
To mouthfuls of meat
And after some time
The silly game is up,
The hawk is off its food.
One's life is death for another
And the two are inextricably intertwined;
Life or light is incomplete
Without death or shade.
Whenever I think of the two
Meeting each other like this
I always think
There is more than meets the eye;
And I always end up
Asking myself if this is
Preordained or by chance.
Yes, I always end up
Arguing with myself,
I do not know why,
I just cannot help it.
