'70% of Manipur’s population still depends on traditional medicines'

Out of around 12000 reported medicinal plants available across the globe, around 430 species available in the Northeastern region of India and among them 108 have been noted down as local medicinal uses in Manipur.
In his special lecture on the topic, “Ethno Medicine and Health Care System” at the concluding day of a National Seminar on “Ethno Science and Traditional Technology of Tribes and Indigenous Peoples Northeast India” held at MB College, Imphal, Prof P Kumar Singh, Centre for Advanced Study in Life Science, Manipur University observed that India is known for its valuable heritage of herbal medicinal knowledge. Citing about the significance of these medicinal plants in the state, the professor said that more than 70 percent of the total population of Manipur were still dependent on traditional medicine on account of lack of medical facilities in various parts of the state.
