ARIBAM SYAM SHARMA’S “ASANGBA NONGJABI”
The 5th M.K. Binodini Devi Memorial Lecture will be given by artist Vivan Sundaram on February 8, 2017, at 2 PM at the
MFDC Auditorium, Palace Gate. The event is presented in association with LEIKOL, the women writers’ circle founded by M. K. Binodini Devi. It is supported by the Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur. Shri Thoidingjam Tombi, former Principal of Imphal Art College, will be the Chief Guest. Shri Deleep Hawaibam, Commissioner, Art and Culture, will preside.
Among the best-known Indian artists in the international art world, Vivan Sundaram (b. 1943)
studied painting in Baroda and London in the 1960’s. Since 1990 he has turned to making
artworks as sculpture, installation, photography and video. He has exhibited in the Biennale’s
of Sydney (2008), Seville (2006), Taipei (2006), Sharjah (2005), Shanghai (2004), Havana
(1997), Johannesburg (1997), and Kwangju (1997). Vivan has participated in many group
shows, such as in London (Tate Modern, 2001), New York (International Centre for
Photography, 2008), Tokyo (Mori Museum (2008), and Munich (Haus der Kunst, 2006).
His well-known works in photography are Re-take of Amrita (2001-02) and Trash (2008). 409
Ramkinkars, a collaborative art installation show was held at IGNCA, New Delhi, in 2015.
In Re-take of Amrita and Ramkinkar. Vivan will talk about his creative transformation of two
iconic figures of modern Indian art: Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1941) and Ramkinkar Baij (1906-1980). Re-take of Amrita (2001-02) provocatively foregrounds the personality of the artist through her father Umrao Sher-Gil’s evocative photographs. He uses digital tools to transform a family album into performative narratives about subjectivity, memory and desire. Ramkinkar’s monumental cement sculptures become contemporary via the aesthetics of the found object, where they also function in a performative manner, within an immersive theater production titled 409 Ramkinkars (2015). His paintings become sculptural props for the play, which also includes a reference to Binodini, whom Ramkinkar painted and drew.
The lecture will be followed by the theatrical premičre of Asangba Nongjabi, Aribam Syam Sharma’s 2003 telefilm based on the story and screenplay by M.K. Binodini Devi. The film is a portrayal of Gautam, an artist determined to uphold his freedom but is torn between his two loves, both only too gentle in their demands, and yet deeply caring.
