4th International Convention of SPIC MACAY inaugurated at IIT Guwahati
IIT Guwahati witnessed the kick start of the 4th International Convention of SPIC MACAY. The inaugural ceremony of SPIC MACAY was decorated by the Honorable Governor of Assam and Nagaland Shri Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya (Chief Guest), Director of IIT Guwahati, Dr. Gautam Biswas, Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. ChandanMahanta.
Honorable Governor of Assam and Nagaland Shri P.B. Acharya while addressing the national and international dignitaries, said ‘I am very happy to be associated with 4th International Convention of SPIC MACAY and this is a very unique opportunity especially for the people of North – East India, to come forward and have an overwhelming experience of witnessing Indian Classical Music and Art’. He also said, ‘I support this movement and wish to see every Indian child be interested in Indian classical music and art and take part in them’.
Supporting International Yoga Day, he added ‘Learning Yoga is a very key aspect in every human being’ and wanted participants to actively take part in the yoga, being conducted in this week long convention. Owing to the wonderful performances of various artists, he added ‘Feast to the eyes and feast to the ears is a feast to the soul’.
He talked about strengthening of the nation by adding, ‘Empowerment of society is strength for nation’, and quoted ‘Strength of the chain lies in its weakest link – Societies weakest link is in our government schools’. Congratulating the entire organizing committee for putting up a great show and also appreciating all the participants both national and international participants for being a part of this convention, he added ‘I also invite all international participants to come and join me over a cup of coffee to share your experience, anytime in this weeklong convention’.
Suggesting the participants, how lucky they are for being a part of this convention, he added ‘Every artist is a big volume of book, this convention is a great opportunity to study them’. He ended his speech, by spelling the importance of 8th States of North-East India by defining Namaste as, ‘Each letter in the word NAMASTE stands for, N – North, Nagaland; A – Assam; M – Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram; A – Arunachal Pradesh; S – Sikkim; T – Tripura, E – East and Namaste from North – East India to the entire world for attending the convention’.
All the events which took part on the opening ceremony have pulled a massive crowd. After the invited dignitaries had addressed the crowd, the mesmerizing evening began with performances by an internationally acclaimed Indian classical flutist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia who is a recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhusan. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is a world-renowned exponent of the bansuri or bamboo flute.
He is one of those rare classical musicians who expanded the peripheries of classical music by taking it to the common masses. Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia has been the recipient of a host of awards both national and international starting in 1984 with the Sangeet Natak Academy Award right up to 2012 when he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship. He is also bestowed with the NDTV's 25 Global Living Legends by the President of India in a glittering ceremony at Rastrapati Bhavan in December 2013.
This was followed by Sattriya Nritya (Assamese Origin), which is one among the eight principal classical Indian dance traditions by ‘Bayanacharya’ Shri Guru Ghanakanta Bora Muktiyar, who is one of the most eminent exponents and gurus of Sattriya dance. Sattriya has remained a living tradition since its creation by medieval polymath Srimanta Sankardev in 15th Century Assam. Over the years Sattriya Nritya has received greater acceptance and patronage both outside the state of Assam and outside India.
9th – 15th May, will be a plethora for a large spectrum of cultural events. Several events would be taking part throughout the day in various parts of IIT Guwahati. The participants will learn classical and folk forms of music and dance, traditional crafts, literature, arts etc from a celebrated Guru, who has mastered their skill in that particular art form, in an intensive workshops.
